Developer’s version for Bobby firmware released (SSH access)

By 2014-12-23 Buffalo + Plex

Just to clear the air, I’m stating it here: the regular custom firmwares do not have SSH access enabled. Most of the regular users wouldn’t use it and since they don’t know much about it, it poses a security risk to them.

If you want SSH access, you have to download the so called “Developer’s version” of the custom firmware. The latest one is called “BobbyDev” and as you can imagine it contains the same features as the “Bobby” firmware, but SSH is enabled. You can download it from the “other versions” page.

Also to make a developer’s life easier, the web interface timeout is raised to one hour and optware bootstrap files are copied to the home folder of root for different devices so it’s faster to install.

Change your password if you install a developer’s firmware, you don’t want any malware messing up your Linkstation.

Also, apologies to all Mac users, packaging these firmwares takes up enough time as it is already, I’m only packaging developer’s firmware for Windows. For now. Also, I’m not packaging it for each new version, only when my time allows it.

If anyone is interested in how to create a developer’s firmware for Mac based on the Windows package, leave a reply and I’ll create a quick tutorial.

    GaryT,
I would like to know how to create the mac version, is there a way to get debug tools working in order to allow you to flash over?

      Hi Ted,

If you can wait a few more days, the next version of the firmware is going to have SSH integrated. It was too much hassle to create three packages, I’ll only create two from now on.
